The satin exterior is water-resistant, so it protects your bag's own leather lining from any dampness before it reaches it, and it's smooth rather than rough, so it doesn't rub or scuff the leather the way a stiff-edged insert can over time. A slim, reinforced base board sits at the bottom, thin enough that you cannot feel it through the bag, but firm enough to stop whatever you carry from pressing into and dragging on your bag's own base panel.
